In your World Religions Course Reader, I have included the entirety of the critically important Christian theological statement entitled “The Kairos Document” which was written in 1985 as a critique against “State Theology” and “Church Theology” – both of which supported the racist-capitalist Apartheid State of South Africa. The text offers a “Prophetic Theology” and “Challenge to Action” as a theological foundation for joining the revolution against Apartheid State. This text is an excellent example of how religion is meaningful in the context of racial oppression – either to give theological justification to state violence; or church justification of pacifism that reinforces state violence; or prophetic calls for liberation and political action. After you read this work, I want you to explain one key theme in prophetic theology/challenge to action and why you believe that was important in the anti-apartheid revolution. How does that theme make use of Christian teachings? How is it different from either state or church theology?
